Essex and in particular Epping Forest has a long and close history with Lord Baden-Powell. On 17 September 1929 he was created Baron Baden-Powell of Gilwell, County Essex being named after Gilwell Park which has now become Scoutings spiritual home. Lord Baden-Powell chose Gilwell Park, situated on the edge of the beautiful Epping Forest, in 1919 as his training ground.
Thousands of scouts took part in the Gilwell adventure, the 108-acre site was host to a range of daytime activities including archery, canoeing and go-karting. Its centrepiece The White House, a fully restored Grade II listed building, housed a display of scouting’s prize artefacts during the celebration.
