Stray Animals

By far the most common stray animal in the District is lost or abandoned dogs.

Dog owners have a responsibility under the law to prevent their dogs from straying and causing injury or damage.

What to do if you find a stray dog

A stray dog can be defined as one that is in a public place, not under the charge of its keeper. If you see a stray dog you can report it to our Animal Welfare Service on 01992 564085.

If you decide to take personal responsibility for a stray dog you must, by law, do one of the following things:

• return to its owner - if the owner can be identified
• contact our Stray Dog Line on 01992 564398

You could be liable for a fine if you find a stray dog and keep it without the written permission of the local authority or the police.

Local Council Role

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, your local council is legally responsible for taking in stray dogs. It must provide suitable kenneling for any dogs seized by its officers or brought in by anyone else. Dogs must be kept for a minimum of seven days if not claimed by their owner.

Council's can charge owners of stray dogs any costs incurred plus £25. They must keep a register of dogs they have seized which the public can inspect free of charge.
