Smarter Driving

In the UK, transport contributes 25% to the annual carbon  emissions. In addition, the number of cars in the UK continue to rise, which has dramatically added to the problems of congestion and pollution.

Learning to drive in a more fuel economic way and incorporating 'smarter driving' techniques has numerous benefits. In addition to reducing the general wear and tear on your vehicle it can also help in reducing your annual fuel bills and save you money while also lowering your carbon footprint at the same time.

1) Look ahead - the more prepared you are for the layout of the road and oncoming traffic signals, the smoother your driving will be.

2) Stay in as high a gear as possible - as long as your car is happy, move up the gears earlier than you would normally.

3) Try not to stop - Have you ever pushed a car that's broken down? If so you know how much energy is needed to get one to start moving. Each time you let the car come to a standstill, this boost of energy is needed to get it moving again. If you keep it moving, even very slowly, you cut out that extra push and save fuel.

4) Anticipate other road users. Try to see what other road users are doing so that you have time to adjust to their actions. This keeps the car moving and your driving smooth.

5) Use gradients. When driving down a hill, there's no need to use the accellerator; a downhill gradient gives the car kinetic energy for free. Also, never accellerate UP a hill. This wastes fuel.
