We cannot divulge the exact nature of how we investigate claims that are suspected of being fraudulent, however our investigators are able to utilise a vast variety of methods in order to uncover fraud.
All of the council’s investigation team are fully trained (and experienced!!) in most counter fraud techniques including interviewing suspects, covert surveillance and evidence gathering including photographic and video evidence. They are all Authorised Officers under Social Security Law which means they are fully empowered to obtain information form a variety of sources including employers, contractors, pension providers and licensing authorities.
We also use all legislation currently available to us in conducting investigations which means that our investigators (subject to the provisions of the law being adhered to) can gain access to bank and building society accounts and information held by organisations such as finance and credit providers, insurance companies, utilities such as, electricity, gas and water and telecommunication companies, etc.
Epping Forest District Council is committed to a robust anti – fraud stance and we have a clear policy on taking action against people who are not truthful with us in order to receive money to which they are not entitled. We understand that most people claiming benefit from the council are honest but we will consider taking action such as criminal prosecutions against those who are not.
We have a strong track record of prosecuting benefit fraudsters and in most cases seek to publicise the facts of the case once they have been convicted.
Don’t be a Fraudster !!
If the Council prosecutes you, you will then have a criminal record!
Remember to be truthful when completing benefit forms and declare everything that you are asked to. Alternatively if you are already claiming benefit, you must declare all changes in the circumstances of anyone named on your claim, in writing to the benefits division as soon as they occur.
If you need advice on any aspect of your claim, please contact the Council’s Benefit Division who will be happy to help you.
