How to Use The Service

Food and garden recycling

Every property in the Epping Forest district will receive a new wheelie bin (180 litre) together with a small green kitchen caddy (5 litre).

The small kitchen caddy can be used for day-to-day use in the kitchen to store cooked and uncooked food prior to transfer to the new wheelie bin.

Transfer the kitchen caddy waste to the wheelie bin

An information pack will be delivered to each household together with the wheelie bin and kitchen caddy giving more details about the service.

New 'green lidded' wheelie bin

Most people find wheelie bins very convenient. However, there may be some properties where they are not practical. In these special circumstances, following an assessment, we will be able to provide a smaller (25 litre) kerbside caddy which will only take food waste. This is a larger version of the kitchen caddy and should comfortably take a week's worth of food waste. This will be collected every week.

The new wheelie bin (180 litre) or large kerbside (25 litre) caddy should be presented on the boundary of your property by 7am on the day of collection. The wheelie bin or kerbside caddy will be collected on the same day as your recycling collection. Please do not present the kitchen caddy for collection.

Liners for Wheelie Bins and Caddies

Epping Forest District Council will not be providing liners for your new wheelie bin or for your caddy. There is no need to use a liner - your food and garden waste can be put directly into your new containers. If you do choose to line your wheelie bin or caddy you must follow the below guidelines.

Please do not use any type of plastic bags to line your wheelie bin or caddies. Do not use any remaining green waste sacks as these are made from a material which will not be accepted at the disposal site and we will therefore not be able to empty your wheelie bin.

Lining your kitchen caddy with newspaper

Newspaper can be used to wrap food waste in before depositing into the new wheelie bin and can also be used to line your caddy. Please see the diagram and description below.

Lining your kitchen bucket

Lining your kitchen bucket

Step 1 - place the kitchen bucket onto two sheets of newspaper (or one sheet folded if its a broadsheet paper) Cut or tear 4 lines from the corner of the bucket straight to the edge.

Step 2 - fold the centre parts inwards to form a capital H pattern.

Step 3 - bring the outer parts inwards and and place down the centre into the bottom of the bucket and the outer parts should now be the walls of the liner.

Step 4 - after step 3 your liner may be a bit creased. This is normal. It is a good idea to trim off excess paper hanging over the edge of the bucket so that the lid is able to close properly.

Extra step - for extra absorbancy fold a sheet in three and place inside and tuck the excess inside the bucket.

Food in newspaper can be placed directly into the garden wheelie bin.

Lining the kitchen caddy with compostable kitchen caddy liner

We can also accept compostable caddy liners available from supermarkets and some online suppliers providing they display the following symbol.

The compostable liners can be tied up and placed directly into the garden wheelie bin.
