Fly tippingFly tipping is the unlawful disposal of waste and illegal dumping of items. It is an eyesore that can be dangerous and pollutes land and waterways.

Fly tipping can include general domestic waste, large items such as fridges and mattresses, garden refuse, commercial waste such as builder's rubble and tyres. Removal costs are paid for out of your Council Tax.

What should I do if I see someone fly tipping?

  • Do not approach them, they may become violent
  • Do not touch the waste or open containers, they may contain hazardous material
  • Report it

How to report fly tipping?

    Make a note of the following information:
  • The date, time and place fly tipping took place
  • The type and size of the waste
  • The registration number and description of vehicle involved

Penalties

Fines for fly tipping are up to £50,000 and / or 6 months' imprisonment. Fines are unlimited if the case goes to the Crown Court or up to 2 years' imprisonment, and up to 5 years if hazardous waste is dumped.

Where fly tipping involves use of a vehicle, the driver can be prosecuted, as can the person in control of the vehicle. The Police have powers to seize vehicles used for fly tipping. [Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989 section 6].

We can only take action on fly tipping that is on public highway land.

How to dispose of extra waste

Know where your local civic amenity site (also known as a tip) is and its opening times, you can take your extra household or garden waste there free of charge.

If you need to dispose of extra or bulky waste contact your collection service or use a licensed waste carrier. Together we can improve our environment!
